Time of flight: We took off five minutes earlier than our scheduled departure time of 07:10 and arrived in Auckland at 07:40.
How full: The flight was almost full – I’m guessing mostly with business travelers who mostly kept to themselves or were glued to their iPads and laptops during the short trip.
Duty: A single crew member was a hobby, from cabin announcements to closing doors with the help of ground staff, serving water, checking seat belts and closing overhead luggage compartments. A nice guy who didn’t seem upset about starting his early morning shift (but it was a Friday when most offices are buzzing).
Airport Experience: I was advised to check in at Whangarei Airport as an international passenger at 05:40 as I was on a connecting flight from Auckland to Brisbane. There wasn’t a soul in the room as I cautiously walked up to the check-in counter. No, no one there either. It looked like Whangarei Airport would be officially opened by our elected Prime Minister. Seven-on-the-spot and an Air New Zealand employee and two cafeteria workers arrived, followed by passengers.

The airline will operate direct daily services between Whangarei and the capital using its fleet of Q300 turboprops.
Leanne Geraghty, Air NZ’s chief customer and sales officer, says when the airline was looking for which Northland airports to operate long-haul flights, Kerikeri provided the fastest solution for its customers.
“Flights from Northland to the capital require additional fuel and Kerikeri Airport has the operational capacity to support our requirements,” says Geraghty.

“Due to the increased demand for flights from Northland, we have looked at where we can add more seats. We have temporarily found a solution that will allow us to fly the Auckland – Whangarei route and the Wellington Whangarei route.”
With Auckland at alert level 3 this week, Air NZ is extending its temporary service between Wellington and Kerikeri from 29 September to 5 October.
“These years will keep residents of Noordland connected to the rest of the country, while local tourists can visit us for a short break and help boost our economy,” said Sheryl Mai, mayor of Noordland.
If Auckland remains at alert level 3 for longer, Air NZ will consider extending these Northland services for longer.
