Wesley Hospital Floor Plan – For more than 27 years, Wesley Medical Center, Wichita’s largest medical campus, has relied on Key Construction to complete its most challenging construction tasks. The core team has successfully completed more than 850 projects totaling over $100 million for Wesley. The renovation was a one-year, four-phase interior renovation project that included all 20 LDRP patient rooms, nurses’ stations, reception, conference rooms, public restrooms, lobbies, offices and corridors. The renovation included changing the layout of the LDRP room and new head and foot wall configurations to accommodate new equipment, casework and Murphy beds. Linker touch screen monitors were among the amenities added to the LDRP rooms to improve the patient experience. The restrooms in the LDRP patient rooms were also renovated, adding new jetted tubs with solid surfaces along with new tile and plumbing fixtures. Barn doors were installed to replace swinging toilet doors to give more open space in the patient rooms. The center remained open during construction.

The original start date was delayed, and Key Construction completed construction by installing Philips equipment to meet the owner’s original patient application dates. This rapid project was completed in 20 weeks, while everything outside the cardiovascular department remained operational.

The renovation included three cath labs and control rooms, a supply room, dirty linens, changing rooms and offices. Floor lab equipment was provided by Philips and included an Allura FD10 floor stand, Allura FD20 ceiling and Allura Biplane FD10 system. These systems required minimum clearances of +/- 0”, which was difficult to achieve in the structure of the early 1900s, but the entire team worked tirelessly to find solutions to the unusual space constraints.

This fast-paced renovation project was completed in 28 weeks. The key construction remodeled the existing patient rooms into a new endoscopy suite with six procedure rooms (two of which have nubum), three clean rooms, three deconstruction rooms, pre/post-op, one isolation room, two changing rooms, three restrooms, dirty utility room, clean utility room, nurse’s station, rest room and x-ray room.

The space received a new air handling unit and structural steel on the adjacent roof to support it. The renovation also includes new electrical, HVAC, plumbing, medical gas, nurse call, Code Blue and fire systems. The existing fire sprinkler system was reworked to accommodate the new layout.

Finishes include welded seam/coated sheet-vinyl flooring, ceramic tile, VCT, rubber base, epoxy paint, metal and plastic laminate cabinets, solid stainless steel surfaces and counters, new curtain track with IVs and cubicles, wall protection IPC, plastics are included Laminate and stainless steel doors and new door hardware (access controls and operators).

Key and its subcontractors were required to comply with strict ICRA and ILS requirements and to complete the work in a working hospital environment.

The Varian Edge Radiosurgery System offers stereotactic cancer treatment technology that allows surgeons to deliver targeted doses of radiation to tumors using minimally invasive procedures. A complete renovation of the former linear accelerator facility has been completed to accommodate this new equipment. As usual when working in a medical facility, the work was coordinated and arranged around the medical staff and surgical schedule.

The ER addition and renovation work was done in a very active hospital ER with limited site access. Temporary life safety and access to emergency responders literally changed and maintained daily. The multi-stage interior renovation was also very challenging, with a strict infection control plan and patient safety at the top of the list. Key construction worked multiple shifts to meet project goals and schedules.

The renovation of the patient rooms of the 4 towers was completed over a two-year period, with all new finishes and ADA upgrades. Understanding the importance of patient safety, infection control and temporary life safety, we were able to meet all project objectives. Daily owner and contractor meetings are required to coordinate with hospital staff.

Completed in 2014 as part of Wesley Medical Center’s multiple operating room renovations, the hybrid operating room was the facility’s first. Combining minimally invasive and traditional surgery with the latest imaging technology, physicians use real-time intraoperative image guidance to perform minimally invasive procedures and perform open surgical cases.
