The unique combination of natural beauty and pleasant, mild winters meant that Moreton Bay had been kept secret for many years. However, when the Hornibrook Highway was built in 1935, the distant and romantic Margate was soon discovered. The highway crossed the Pine River and Hay’s Inlet, connecting Redcliffe and Brisbane for 2.74 km and was the longest road bridge in Australia. By 1969, more than 20,000 cars used the bridge every day, and in 1974 a second bridge was built. A third intersection was opened and named the Ted Smout Bridge in honor of Ted Smout, Queensland’s oldest surviving World War I miner, who lived in the area in 2010 and died in 2004 at the age of 106.
