On a weekday afternoon in southwest Atlanta, passersby turn a street corner and walk past a window of windows. Maybe they catch a glimpse of the aerial map of Atlanta covered in sun-faded sticky notes. Or maybe they see people working and talking at desks.
Atlanta City Studio is a pop-up store that will engage the public in the urban design process. The pop-up, run by the city’s Department of Urban Planning, invites everyone to come in, talk with the city’s urban designers and collaborate on project ideas. City staff are there to answer questions and give the public a way to get their ideas for improving their neighborhoods in front of the right people. Oh, and if you have a question about a broken water meter or pothole, the studio can help with that too.
Atlanta City Studio opened in 2016 at Ponce City Market, a repurposed historic building with food court and shopping. In 2017, the pop-up moved to its current location in Cascade Heights, a historically black neighborhood. The story of how Atlanta City Studio came to Cascade Heights highlights the nature of the audience. The Cascade Heights Community Development Corporation invited the city to tour the neighborhood, hoping to eventually revitalize the business corridor.
“We knew [the studio] would draw a lot of resources we needed, and it would also shine a light on the neighborhood,” said Corliss Claire, secretary and founder of the community development corporation. “Development is coming in this direction, but we want to make sure we stay on top.”

Cascade Heights is one of the last areas near downtown Atlanta that has available land for development. Claire, who has lived in Cascade Heights since 2002, says this is a critical moment to help guide future growth while preserving the neighborhood’s character.
Then in April 2017, the studio opened in Cascade Heights. It has six full-time employees and one fellowship student.
The studio began by listening to the residents and learning what they had already achieved and what they wanted for the future. “We put their work up on the walls next to urban design and try to figure out what those projects were,” says Kevin Bacon, director of the Atlanta City Studio.
Six months into his tenure there, the studio has identified projects to work on in Cascade Heights. This included making Beecher Street, a key link, more walkable and working with the community to design and build a custom bus shelter that has real-time bus signs and landscaped planters. Ideas came from the CDC and others in the community.

The studio also has its own expertise. CDC asked the studio to hold a session with business owners on how to improve their storefronts, says Claire. It went on. The studio eventually offered a matching grant program, giving eligible property owners up to $20,000 for facade improvements. By the time the program was completed in the summer of 2018, five businesses had received the Storefront Redesign Award, and the city launched a similar award program in the West End area.
As well as talking to the public about design projects, the studio has recurring events every month to engage people: a book club, a lunch forum and a morning bowl discussion. People and groups can also use the studio space for meetings.
The studio is not just a public-facing design arm. It also represents the city as a whole. An employee is always obliged to answer questions, even if they are not design-related. “If this is your first point of contact with city government, we want it to be a very good experience and point you in the right direction,” says Sonia Sequeira, the studio’s head of community engagement.
Atlanta City Studios’ more than two years in Cascade Heights is coming to an end as it moves to another part of town. Although some Cascade Heights projects have been completed, others are still ongoing. The studio has been working on the design of the Beecher Street Walkability Project, and the next step is to find funding. It will continue to support the project even after he leaves the neighborhood.

Another project envisioned how to bring additional housing to the business district. The studio guided the CDC on how to advance this vision moving forward.
“We would never have been able to solidify our ideas and our vision for the future of the business quarter and also for the immediate neighborhood without the resources that the studio has,” says Claire. “[For] a government entity, I don’t usually have this kind of glowing praise.”
The next stop for Atlanta City Studio is south of downtown, where it will open in late summer. One of the most notable developments to come is Centennial Yards, a 40-acre, mixed-use mini-city center.
“If you look at South Central, among many other places you could argue, everything that’s going to happen right there is just begging for us to be a shaping force in the middle of it.”
