When I visited with two young reviewers – four-year-old Daniel and six-year-old Jack – the place was on a school holiday.
Quest At Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney
Parents set up camp with picnics under large shade canopies and wide-eyed children raced toward the many playground structures. The site stretches for 300 meters and is located just a few hundred meters from the Parramatta River
The water view was supposed to please the parents, but young Daniel soon corrected us when we asked him the best part of the park: I like that you can see that river.

The Flying Fox is bigger than any other Sydney park – “Should I wear a helmet?” asked Jack, looking a little worried – but not far from sitting on the thin, rubbery ground. It also has two “foxes” so kids can go with mom or dad if they get scared

The center of the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the main venue of the 2003 Rugby World Cup, Australia Stadium – formerly known as ANZ Stadium – is a striking monument to Sydney’s ambitions as an international sporting destination. Walk around the huge arena, crane your neck to take in its vastness, and check out the nearby Olympic Stadium (now a fountain). Backstage “Explore” tours and spectacular overhead “Gantry” tours will resume as soon as coronavirus restrictions allow.
One of the park’s most beloved facilities is the Climate Center, a public sports facility steeped in Olympic history. Reserve your lane for a swim in the 50m pool, where Ian Thorpe won five Olympic gold medals, or try one of the competition-quality diving boards and platforms. Other attractions include the Dive In History exhibit, Splash n Fun water playground for kids and adults, rapid river rides, water slides and Splash’s playground for toddlers.
Located in Quesant, the NSW Hall of Champions has honored more than 370 great Australian athletes across 55 sports. With unique stories, photographs and artefacts, this museum brings to life the achievements of legendary figures such as Sean Gould, Yvonne Golagung and Jack Brabham. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sydney Games, the Special Olympics Champions Exhibition will also run until the end of May 2021.

35km of safe, family-friendly cycling in this 40 hectare, mainly level park on the eastern side of Sydney’s Olympic Park precinct. Hire bikes, including tandems and tagalongs – or bring your own to explore open grasslands and shady mangrove forests dotted with bird hides, fountains and sculptures. Stop by the Trails Tower for great views of the park, river and city skyline, or head to the Waterview Cafe for a well-received refreshment.
Much of Sydney’s 20th-century housing was built with materials from the State Brickyard, which was founded in 1911 on clay fill at Homebush Bay. An elevated walkway – 18.5 meters above the ground – now surrounds the old brick pit, allowing visitors to view this industrial heritage and also preserve the habitat of the rare green and golden bell frog. The 550m circular walk offers beautiful views of the area and is enhanced by the natural sounds of frogs and birds, recorded by former pit crews.
Sydney Olympic Park includes many ecologically important landscapes, including freshwater wetlands, estuaries and mangrove forests that support dozens of species of lizards, frogs, waterfowl and migratory birds. It’s easy to immerse yourself in this serene natural landscape by following the boardwalk through the Badu Mangroves or Narwang Wetlands. The waterfall sanctuary at the northern end of Badu Mangrove is a special place to experience the rich bird life of the park.
Brickpit Ring Walk
Whether you want to channel your inner medieval warrior, improve your strength or just strike an empowering pose, the Archery Center at Sydney Olympic Park has everything you need to learn and practice this ancient sport. There are sessions or classes for all ages (10 and up) and different skill levels Birthday parties, school holiday events and team events are also available
Once a naval weapons and explosives depot, the area between Sydney Olympic Park and the Parramatta River has been transformed into a multi-use heritage and leisure precinct. The best day to visit is Sunday, when the Heritage Railway runs a discovery tour through historic military buildings and otherwise inaccessible forests. Weekends are also the time to take a Segway down the river or visit the BirdLife Australia Discovery Centre. Serving contemporary Australian cuisine with uninterrupted river views, Armory Wharf Cafe is open Wednesday to Sunday.
Blaxland Riverside Park, located next to the Armory Wharf Cafe, is a great place for a family day out or a day out with friends. There is a beautiful riverside path, picnic area and free gas and electric BBQ The park also includes Sydney’s largest playground!
