I’m not claiming to be an expert in what I say here or you should take it as a solid truth, but I thought I’d go through the process to get out there and my opinion on some of the main differences Will share I is found between the UK and the US, specifically between London and San Francisco. Hope someone finds this a little helpful too!

I’ve also decided to leave out or just touch on some aspects that I don’t think I can really give enough information about and things that are too half for me like getting my visa, social security number, my credit score. Making and finding housing (though I easily touched on living expenses).

Getting a visa to come here was pretty straightforward for me (or at least compared to what I thought). I came here via SVIP, which I mentioned in the previous post and they arranged a lot of my US work visa and handled a lot of the process. All I needed to do was fill out some paperwork, fill out some online forms and then make an appointment at the US Embassy in London. At the appointment, I spent more time waiting than I actually “interviewed”. I have put the interview in quotes because it contains only a few questions like why am I going to the US and what to do. Nothing deep.

Again, SVIP really came up with it like Deliveroo and it helped make life easier when it came (not much help to you, I know). We had accommodation for the first month for us and I was lucky to be placed in the house where I stayed for the rest of my time. The “SVIP House” is a house in Bernal Heights that the program rents for 6 intakes each year. I didn’t even have to go home for hunting. As you know housing cost in the Bay Area is one of the most expensive in America. By the time you read this, these prices may vary, but as of March 2019, the average price to rent a one bedroom apartment was over $3.6k/month. Obviously you can find some housewares and split rents (I was primarily looking at HubHaus as a living option before I found out about SVIP houses), in Oakland or San Jose in San Francisco. Living outside the U.K. (still expensive at ~$2.6k) or even if it’s just living in a place that isn’t that great for saving money. I’m just going to go here and expect you to pay more than what you are currently paying. Before I arrived, I was expecting to pay a maximum of $1.5k/month, but I actually paid a little more than that.

You will need a Social Security number to give to your employer and earn your salary. A bit like a national insurance number in the UK, except they ask you for your SSN more often. I remember when I was getting a gym membership and even looking at the phone contracts I was asked for it. Getting an SSN is pretty straight forward, all you need to do is make an appointment and head to any Social Security office booked with the proper paperwork. Be prepared to wait a while there. You should get your number in the post within a few weeks.

For me, the main thing I look for in a SIM deal is data. Texts and minutes I can get away with just using WhatsApp or social media. Before I arrived, I looked here at the major carriers online: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Google-Fi and it was looking at around $60-80/month so I didn’t have to rely on search. Wi-Fi which is quite ridiculous. Luckily Mint Mobile met me when I arrived and it couldn’t be easier, I just paid $300 and they sent me a sim to put in my phone that offered 12GB of data, unlimited minutes and texts for 12 months gives. I haven’t had a problem with it and I recommend checking them out too!

I have nothing against Bank of America, Chase or any other bank, but Wells Fargo was the only bank we decided to go with. There was absolutely no problem opening the account (although I did have problems transferring all my dollars when I got home). However, I couldn’t find a contactless card, which I think is a bit odd, they seem to be a bit back on that front, most still use a magnetic stripe. The app is also pretty much dead but some good news is that Monzo is launching in the US so you can check it out.

So the bad news is there is no Nando’s or Weatherspoon, but there are plenty of great places to eat and drink. San Francisco is known for its Mexican food, the Mission District has plenty of taquerias, even the best burrito in America. Of course there are plenty of burger places too (my favorite), as there’s an In-N-Out at Fisherman’s Wharf in California, but it’s always full of tourists. Be sure to check out the secret menu for it before you go as well.

I’m no more a fan of grocery stores here than in the UK. Where’s the $3 Meal Deal!?! They’re expensive and a little dull when you walk in and you have the feeling of being in an episode of Breaking Bad. Or maybe it’s just me. Although there is a flashing light…

The oyster equivalent in San Francisco is a Clipper card. You can use them to get Bart or Muni. You can get a Clipper card from a machine at a BART station or a store like Walgreens. It costs about $3 but you save 50¢ per trip so you can cover the cost for one of them after 6 trips. At the time of this writing, Clipper Card or Paper Ticket is the way to pay for public transportation, so there’s no Google/Apple Pay integration or contactless card payment.
