Singapore, 30 July 2022 – Institute of Technical Education’s (ITE) team ‘The Tree Musketeers’ emerged winners of the Landscape Design Challenge (LDC) competition at the Singapore Garden Festival () 2022 organized by the Centre. for urban greening and ecology at the National Parks Administration (NParks). The 17-year-old students were delighted to win the top prize as it was their first time to participate in the competition.

The Landscape Design Challenge is a design-based competition that showcases landscape designs by students from the Institute of Higher Education in Singapore. Organized as a part of the competition, this competition provides a platform for students to showcase their creativity and knowledge of landscape design.

The competition highlights the professionalism required to design and build a landscaped area and aims to encourage more young people to consider a career in the landscape industry. By simulating a real work environment, students can put classroom learning into practice and be challenged to expand their minds.
In a live competition held on July 30, 10 teams were given 4 hours to transform 10 plots of land into beautifully decorated gardens under the theme “Botanical Fantasy”. In addition to the final garden design, teams were also judged on teamwork, the variety of plants represented and project management – key skills to complete the task.
The winning exhibit titled “The Sage Tree of Atlantis” takes visitors to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, which has been affected by the exploitation of its precious resources. A safe tree constructed from recycled plastic water bottles is the centerpiece of the exhibition, symbolizing the hope that one day such plastic waste can thrive and serve new purposes in our lives. The three first year ITE students are Tiara Binte Mohd Isnin, Gwendolyn Marie Tan Kay Shuen and Taswin S/o Vijaykumar.

The “QuITE Nice” team won a silver award with the “Passageway to Fantasia” exhibit, which created a garden inspired by the fantasy land of Fantasia, covered in greenery with mystical creatures. The second year ITE students who participated were Abdul Hannan B Mohammad Ghazali, Cassandra Marie Png Hui Zhen and Riyad Khawi bin Shaiful Yanis.
Avant-garde bronze award-winning team, Nature’s Boutique, was inspired by the harmful effects of fast fashion and created a garden where its breathtaking fabrics are exclusively made from nature, just like Mother Nature’s boutique. Singapore Polytechnic sophomores Khoo Jun Wei, Hsu Sandy Oo and Camarillo Gwyneth Jo Lingling participated.
