One of the best parts of reading children’s literature, especially fiction, is the internship. A child is chosen for a particular job, usually a mysterious one, and begins to spend the next few years of his life being trained. As if they were only meant for one thing in life. Usually, the child discovers that they are very talented in a particular area and they soon outgrow their peers. This may say more about my fascination with children’s literature, but I love the entire subgenre: long hours of study, disrespectful teachers, minor failures with comebacks, and, of course, profanity. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone noticed a certain quality in you as a child? If you have some goals and objectives in life (so it’s not like real life right now)?

As the cover promises, The Apprenticeship is a prime example of the subgenre. It’s consistent, runs smoothly, is properly processed, and is a little stressful. It doesn’t suffer from epicness, nor does it pay too much attention to detail. This is a beautiful and well-crafted piece that you should read as soon as possible, or put into the hands of children.

Further reading: Obviously, the Apprenticeships subgenre (which I may have come up with) covers a large swath of children’s fiction – Harry Potter, The Sword in the Stone, The Absurdion Chronicles, and Sea of Trolls.

On Vote Day, a Redmont neighborhood implements a craft of its choice. However, each will be rejected by the craftsman. Holt, the ranger, gives a note to Baron Earld, who then tells Will to wait until morning for his decision. Unwilling to wait, Will tries to sneak into Barron’s office, but is caught. Arald reveals the note, and begins training as Will Holt’s student. Meanwhile, Horace struggles in Battleschool, as three sophomores begin bullying him.
On harvest day, the wards gather again for a picnic. Horace arrives late, suffering from bullying. He attacks his old friends, starting a fight with Will.
A few weeks later, Will and Holt find a wild boar, and send a farmer to alert Arald. A hunting party is arranged, and Sir Rodney invites Horace. While hunting, a second wild boar surprises the group by attacking Horace. Will distracts him, only to be attacked in return. When the boar attacks Will, Holt shoots him in the heart. Inspired by the experience, Horace and Will create.
Exaggerated versions of the story began to circulate in the village. Believing it to make Battleschool look bad, the goons beat Horace half-conscious. They find Will and try to beat him up as well, only to be stopped by an injured Horace. Holt came in and beat Horace one by one before reporting this to Sir Rodney.

At the Ranger gathering, the Corps receives reports that Kalakara is on the run. Holt decides that he will lead the mission to kill Kalkara, along with Will and Gilan. After a few days of riding, they decide that Will should report back to Castle Redmont, believing that King Duncan is his next target. However, will believe that Halt is next.
Accompanied by the earl, Sir Rodney, and a group of soldiers, Will follows the trail to the ruins of Gorlan Castle in Kalkara where Will’s fears are confirmed. Earl and Rodney manage to kill the first Kalkara, only to be stopped by the second. At a distance of forty meters, Will shot him with a fire arrow, killing him.
At a public ceremony, Earl thanks Will for saving his life, inviting him to transfer to Battleschool. will deny Later that day, Halt gives Will his bronze oak tree. Will is determined to reject Battleschool, believing his father to be a knight and unsure whether he will accept Will’s decision.
