“Today we have given 1 lakh doses of Raksharab and Starvac R (an anti-rabies drug from IIL) free of cost, realizing the vision of ‘one life’, a collaborative effort to achieve better human and animal health through innovative health products,” said Dr. K. Anand Kumar, Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Limited.

The latest State of the World’s Forests 2022 report predicts India as a potential hotspot for zoonotic diseases. About 70 percent of all emerging diseases such as rabies, swine flu, nipah, brucellosis, leptospirosis, porcine cysticercosis and ticks affecting humans are zoonotic in nature.

In their fight against the spread of such zoonotic diseases, IIL vaccination camps have been conducted in 100 cities across the country with the help of veterinary institutes, veterinary colleges and NGOs.

Zoonotic diseases such as rabies have threatened human health since ancient times. Dogs are the leading cause of rabies deaths, accounting for 99% of all rabies in humans, resulting in 18,000 to 20,000 deaths per year.

Do You Know Which Was The World’s First Vaccine And How It Came About?

With World Rabies Day coming up on September 28, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge County health unit is partnering with select veterinarians to offer low-cost rabies vaccination clinics.

Aimed at pet owners who are facing financial challenges, these clinics are being held for the first time since the outbreak. They will be offered on Saturday, October 1st in the City of Kawarthas Lakes and Northumberland County. There are no clinics available in Haliburton County, as a participating veterinarian could not be found there.

The cost of rabies vaccinations at these clinics is $40 per animal (unless otherwise noted). No time is required. Owners should keep dogs on leashes and cats in carriers and bring proof of a recent rabies vaccination for pets if possible. Clinics do not offer pet exams, only vaccinations.

“Rabies are deadly, so vaccinating pets is an important part of pet care and pet ownership,” said Richard Ovcharovich, director of the health department’s health department, in a press release. “By vaccinating your four-legged friend, you are also protecting the health of your family and loved ones.”

Rabies can be transmitted to humans by contact with the saliva of an infected animal through a bite, lick or scratch. In the past three years, the health department has investigated more than 600 animal bites or scratches in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes.

World Rabies Day on 28 September raises awareness of rabies prevention and highlights the progress made in defeating this devastating disease. It also marks the 127th anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur, the French chemist and microbiologist who developed the first rabies vaccine. The vaccine was first used to save the life of nine-year-old Joseph Meister in 1885, after the boy was badly mauled by a rabid dog.

According to the World Health Organization, dogs are the leading cause of rabies deaths worldwide and account for 99 percent of all rabies in humans.
