These terms set out requirements for environmental management and ongoing community engagement in the construction and operation of facilities. We maintain active dialogue with regulators and local residents to ensure management practices meet legal requirements and community expectations.
Development approval for a major expansion of Port Botany’s port facilities was obtained in 2005 to enable the port to meet long-term business growth. A $1 billion expansion project doubles Port Botany’s container-handling capacity.
The development also includes community amenities such as state-of-the-art boat ramps, lookouts and walkways, as well as environmental works including the restoration and expansion of Penrhyn Estuary.
In March 2008, the Department of Planning received planning approval for the development of a second bulk liquid berth (BLB2) at Port Botany. Operation began in December 2013, and BLB2 officially opened on February 21, 2014. Average occupancy rose to around 80%. The new facility has significantly increased the port’s liquid and chemical handling capacity, prior to the opening of BLB2 at BLB1.

Port Botany is a deep water port located in Botany Bay, Sydney, Australia. The port is dominated by containerized manufactured goods trade, followed by bulk liquid imports, including oil and gas. It is one of Australia’s largest container ports and is managed by NSW Ports, which entered into a 99-year lease with the NSW Port Authority in May 2013.
Prior to 1960, Sydney’s international shipping facilities were only in Port Jackson, with bulk and bulk terminals in Darling Harbour and Walsh Bay, and bulk and Ro/Ro/Ro on Gleb Island and White Bay pier.

Containerisation advertisements in the late 1950s made it clear that Sydney needed additional port facilities to meet the demands of new cargo types. The Bulk Liquids Terminal was built in 1979 as a general user facility for imported natural gas, oil, petroleum and chemicals.
During the 1980s, the terminal and storage areas were gradually expanded, with the addition of new ethyl tanks and treatment plants operated by ICI and AGL Storage Cavern in 1994 and 2000.

The bulk liquid terminal can accommodate vessels of approximately 230 m (750 ft) in lgth and 90,000 tons (89,000 long tons; 99,000 short tons).
Completed in 1979, the northernmost container terminal was officially inaugurated by Governor Neville Wren, who named it Brotherson Dock in honor of former Maritime Services Commission chairman Bill Brotherson, who died in 1975.
The terminal was originally leased to Australian shipping company ANL, but was transferred to Patrick in the 1990s. In 2006, Patrick Corporation merged with Toll Holdings.
The Southern Container Terminal opened in 1982 as Brotherson Dock 2 and was leased to the newly formed Stevedore Company Container Terminals Australia (CTAL). Brotherson Dock Two struggles to compete with its northern neighbor, despite the fact that both piers are similar in size and pier length. In its first full year of operation, Brother Two handled just 91,000 containers, with a berth occupancy rate of 40%.

CTAL ceased operations in the 1990s and the terminal lease was sold to shipping company P&O. In 2006, P&O was acquired by Dubai Ports.
Port Botany’s third container terminal was completed in June 2011. The $515 million project involves the reclamation of 63 hectares (160 acres) of land and the construction of a 1.85-kilometer (1.15-mile) ferry that can berth five boats.

The expansion is complemented by continued increased import demand for intermodal containers and space for a third stevedore to Sydney. The expansion is twice the size recommended by an independent commission of inquiry in 2004.
