Mt Druitt Tafe Courses – NSW Police and TAFE are increasing the number of Indigenous Australians in the force through a unique training program that prepares students for tough police work.
Only about two per cent of people currently serving in the NSW Police Force are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent; However, a target of at least four percent has now been set to help close the gap.

The IPROWD training program run by TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute (WSI) provides participants with the skills needed to become police officers and meet the entry requirements for the Associate Degree in Police Training at Charles Sturt University. IPROWD (National Police Recruitment) is a joint program between TAFE NSW, the NSW Police Force and the Australian Government.
Smart Students Skill Up Over School Holidays
The 18-week program began on February 28 in Western Sydney and includes structured training to prepare students to attend the NSW Police College in Goulburn. Students who complete the course receive a Certificate III Career and Academic Pathways Certificate. The statewide program helps up to 180 participants develop the necessary skills and knowledge and includes fitness training with World Cup athletes and TAFE mentor David Winfield, first aid training, health assessments and trips to the NSW Police College. NSW Police officers work closely with TAFE teachers to provide each IPROWD team with specific training, including mentoring and support in preparing police college applications.
