As part of Melbourne Design Week, which runs from 15 to 25 March, the fourth edition of the Melbourne Art Book Fair will take place at the National Gallery of Victoria from 16 to 18 March. Book painters, art lovers, collectors, students and everyone who still believes in the importance of paper and publications will come together for an event that has already attracted more than fifty thousand visitors since 2015, and which will bring together more than one hundred and fifty publishers, artists and designers.

Workshops, book launches, discussions and other activities will turn the weekend into an ongoing celebration of paper – despite the widespread initial fear when e-books first appeared, we are now confident that publishers will keep working with them for a long time. To begin with, a symposium entitled The Future Lasts Only a Moment will take place on Thursday, where the graphic design studio Experimental Jetset will discuss, together with speakers from the fields of philosophy, economics and art, what future(s) we are making.

As for the weekend, you can’t miss the conversation between Beth Wilkinson, founder and editor of Lindsay Magazine, and Tim Fisher, former editor-in-chief of Broadsheet, who will talk about the current landscape of independent magazines, as well as the debate about infinity. print vs. digital. The Melbourne Art Book Fair highlights the role it plays as a global hub for local and international publishers to celebrate the dynamic publishing industry.’
The intersections between fashion and graphic design will be questioned in a full-day symposium organized by representatives of international guests Tunica, Girls Like Us and Berlin-based fashion researcher Femke de Vries. The symposium will explore how these multifaceted agencies encourage fashion discourse, with examples from Tunica, which expanded from magazine publishing to begin publishing capsule collections, and Girls Like Us, which uses t-shirts as a publishing platform. . Tunica will talk about their hybrid practice and the results of publishing these collections, while fashion researcher Femke de Vries will explore the products in fashion and design.
International publishing network Publication Studio (PS), which houses 11 studios on four continents, will make its Australian debut as a workshop host. PS Rotterdam founder, publisher and art director Yin Yin Wong and PS Pearl River Delta (Hong Kong) founder and publisher Elaine W. Ho will present a workshop responding to experimental publishing, citing their practice in the studio and qualities that are unique for their geographic location, along with SP’s overall approach to publishing and fostering global publishing communities.
The Grand Great Hall will be taken over by an art and publishing market, and will also feature Fair Exchange, a site-specific project run by Melbourne design studio No Clients. Fair attendees are invited to bring a book to trade in exchange for a curated selection of books from No Clients. The program, which is a way to highlight the value and worthlessness of books, also aims to explore the distribution of books not just as art or objects, but as a form of currency.

Her work in curatorial research was recognized with the MPavilion|Art Monthly Writing Award and the Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor’s Young and Emerging Artists Scholarship. Maunder’s curatorial work includes Folds of Belonging, Brisbane, 2017 and Why Not Ask Again at the 11th Shanghai Biennale, 2016–2017. Maunder regularly contributes to catalogues, international publications and academic journals. Her projects to date mainly focus on the politics of the Global South, mainly engaged in the Asia-Pacific region.
The sixth edition of the Australian contemporary design fair is filled with a wide range of experimental, collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches, and alongside the introduction of the design collection platform Melbourne Design Fair, the local design community is keen to break the antipodean model, pushing the boundaries of design that serves the greater good.
Melbourne’s cultural calendar has bounced back with confidence from the shutdown with a burst of optimism, as evidenced by this year’s iteration of the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) Melbourne Design Week. Now in its sixth year, Melbourne Design Week is Australia’s premier annual international design event, returning this year with a program that responds to the overarching imaginative theme of ‘Design the World You Want’ and a range of events and exhibitions set in Melbourne and wider regional Victoria from March 17 to 27.
The pandemic has given us time to reflect and question the status quo, which is why the theme of Melbourne Design Week 2022 “Design the World You Want” was more relevant than ever. This was further revealed by design stakeholders responding to the two main pillars of ‘civic good’ and ‘doing good’. The theme of “civic good” encourages participants to think about consultative or collaborative forms of demographic and community-led design for collective appeal, which go beyond understanding the value of design as a functional or aesthetic object. In addition, we are asked to consider the design’s ability to respond to questions of social and environmental impact.

An undercurrent of optimism ran through the program with Simone LeAmon, Hugh Williamson Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture at the NGV, declaring the following on the tone of design in Melbourne right now: “Contemporary design is most supported in Australia, so far as people discuss ideas, explore values and marvel at the creativity involved in producing design. Contemporary Australian collectable design invites us to explore and contemplate the material culture of our region through the power of ideas, material ingenuity and thoughtful creation.”

Design Week spanned several key venues and exhibitions, including the Melbourne Art Book Fair held in the NGV Great Hall, with around 90 publishing platforms participating, including Melbourne favorites Perimeter Editions, Memo Review and Surpluss alongside internationals such as Printer Matter. It was good to see the value of publishing and challenging the intersection between artists and publishers like Tai Snaith, Sophia Dacy-Cole and Wendy Kelly; here acknowledging the role of publishing within wider independent artistic practices outside of a formal publishing relationship.
