Los Angeles To Phoenix – Joel and I love to travel, so when we were invited to his sister’s wedding in Phoenix, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to explore part of the Southwest together. On our travels, we prefer to stop at unconventional, strange and unique places. I use roadtrippers.com to find interesting stops along our route and we’ve found some really good ones here.
Our first stop was lunch en route from LA at Tio’s Tacos in Riverside, CA. This place is crazy. It’s a small Mexican restaurant with a huge garden of creations made from recycled materials. There is a lot to see here, so Joel and I walked around for a long time to see all the characters and small buildings.

After the walk we went for lunch in a restaurant. The food was good, your typical Mexican food, but the agua fresca was amazing! They had so many different varieties, I had pineapple and it was fantastic. Our next stop was the Cabazon Dinosaurs. As dinosaur lovers we had to stop here. These are the giant dinosaurs on the side of the highway in Cabazon, CA. There is a museum here and you can get in a brontosaurus to visit the gift shop, but we had to get out and about so we stopped for some quick photos.

When we got to Arizona, we went straight to Joel’s sisters in Phoenix for a rehearsal dinner and family time. I couldn’t believe how short it was from Los Angeles to Phoenix.
On the day of the wedding, Joel and I had plenty of time to see some of the Phoenix locations. Our first stop was Frank Lloyd Wright’s home, Taliesin West. I studied some of his work in college so just wanted to check it out, we didn’t have time to tour but we definitely want to check it out when we get back.
I’m obsessed with cacti there too – they’re so cool. Another interesting stop was at Louis Lee’s Rock Garden. This is a suburban estate owned and managed by Louis Lee from 1958 until his death in 2006. His family now owns the property and you can view it from the road. There are tons of altars, statues and lights everywhere, it’s really amazing that one man made it all by himself.
Phoenix was unbelievably hot – like hotter than anything I’ve ever experienced. As the day went on we still had places to visit but retreated into the air conditioning. We made a quick stop and saw Camel Back Mountain. The pictures just don’t do it justice. It is an amazing mountain with a beautiful view of the city. We also went to the Hole in Rock on our way back to the hotel – nowhere to go hiking in the heat of the day. We hope to return to Phoenix in the colder months and spend more time outdoors and taking great walks. That evening we attended a wedding on a beautiful golf course in Scottsdale. The wedding was beautiful and we had a wonderful evening with family and friends. Joel and I always forget to take a nice picture of us together, so we only got a selfie of the hotel bathroom. More posts about our Arizona adventure are coming – come back here to see the rest of our trip from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. The Los Angeles to Phoenix highway has been damaged by flash flooding that washed away part of the road through the Southern California desert during the latest bout of monsoon storms that hit the region this summer.
The latest round of flooding began Wednesday night, damaging a road that was part of a bypass adjacent to a repair project along eastern Interstate 10 near the small community of Desert Center, about 265 miles (265 km) east of Los Angeles.
Traffic in both directions was initially halted, but westbound lanes were later reopened to drivers driving from Arizona to California.

All eastbound traffic was diverted until the California Department of Transportation was able to reopen a lane of the highway that was being repaired.
Photos released by Caltrans show water flowing through a deep rut in the highway’s road surface. Floods also affected other roads in the region, including state highways 177, 78 and 62.
A flash flood in the same area in July 2015 washed away the bridge on the east side of I-10 and eroded the ground under the west bridge.
The highway was closed for nearly a week for repairs to the westbound bridge, and traffic was then reduced to one lane in each direction. The east side didn’t reopen until September.

Flash flooding earlier this summer severely damaged roads in Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve and on the south side of Joshua Tree National Park.
Officials called the August 5 flood in Death Valley historic. Hundreds of visitors were initially stranded by flooding and debris-covered roads. It took about two weeks for the park to reopen its most popular areas.
