After a short walk through red gums, you will find a cave with ocher hand-prints. Pause for a moment to reflect on the lives of those whose soles are now immortal. The aboriginal part of the region stretches from Broken Bay in the north to Port Jackson in the south and south west of the Lane Cove River. There were six clans within the nation, and it was the Garrigals who lived at West Head.
Retrace your steps or if you’re inspired to experience more, continue on the Aboriginal Heritage Walk for 4km before returning to where you started at the Resolute Picnic Area.

Kalkari Discovery Center is a good starting point for visiting Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. The center has maps and information about the park’s flora and fauna, and friendly volunteers to answer questions about the area’s Aboriginal history. The Kalkari Center is the starting point for the Kalkari Discovery Trail walking track, a hut, an accessible route through the bush, where you can put your newfound knowledge of the local flora and fauna into practice. You can take the Birwanna Walking Path from the center to Bobbin Head, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch or coffee break at the cafe.
Visitors to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park are spoiled for choice when it comes to bushwalking, from the less accessible Kalkari Discovery Trail to longer multi-day treks that lead beyond the park. The Basin Track and Mackerel Track showcase some of the best features of the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park via a relatively short and easy route, including rock carvings at the Basin Aboriginal Art Site and spectacular views of Mackerel Beach. The America Bay Walking Trail is a moderate walk through Aboriginal carvings to a beautiful waterfall overlooking America Bay, while the family-friendly Salvation Loop takes you through the park’s wetlands. Information on many of the walks in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park can be found at the visitor center and online.

The Aboriginal Heritage Walk is a 4.5km (3mi) loop that includes several artistic and cultural sites of the original owners of the land. You’ll first find the Red Hand Cave on foot, with its red ocher handprints. Follow the next track to see stunning rock carvings carved into the sandstone. The track has a traditional working shelter where people stay warm in winter. The residents of West Head were tragically wiped out by a smallpox epidemic within a year of the First Fleet’s arrival, so take a moment to reflect and pay your respects here.
Bobbin Head is the perfect beach destination to enjoy a picnic, barbecue or lunch at the on-site restaurant or cafe before taking a bushwalk or fishing trip. You can hire a rowing boat from Bobbin Head Empire Marina or check the Bobbin Head Information Center for maps of bush walks and other attractions in the area. If you don’t want to go too far, the mangrove trail behind the picnic area is a good place to spot some of the park’s bird species.
If you can’t fit everything you want to see in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park into one day, set up camp at Citarum Campground and wake up to a waterfront view of Pittwater. The campsite is a great place to explore the park via the Basin and Mackerel Tracks and see the Basin Aboriginal Art Site. It’s a great place to swim, swim and see wildlife like kookaburras and swamp wallabies. Basin Campground is car-free and access is by boat from Palm Beach or a long walk up a steep trail. The Basin Aboriginal Art Site is an excellent example of traditional rock carving in the park. The site can be found along the basin route and is best viewed early in the morning or late at night, making it easy to see the fine lines of animals and humans carved into the rock face. If you want to delve deeper into the history and culture of the park’s traditional owners, consider booking a place on an Aboriginal cultural tour with Sitaram and Guringai Aboriginal Tours, whose guides have a thorough knowledge of the area.

Barrenjoy Lighthouse stands proudly at Sydney’s northern tip, Barrenjoy Head on Palm Beach. The lighthouse was built in 1891 from local sandstone. You can reach the site by a short, easy walk along the Barrenjoy Track; The view of Broken Bay, the Central Coast and across the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is worth the walk. If you’re visiting between May and September, bring your binoculars to help you spot whales migrating along the coast.
