Mention the word “action camera” to most onlookers and they’ll immediately think you’re talking about a GoPro. The name comes with a lot of brand associations and passion, and the tiny cameras are used for everything from synchronized skydiving to swimming with marine predators.
Kogan hopes to take a slice of the lucrative action camera market with its version, or Full HD Action Camera for short. From the outside, it looks amazing, with rounded edges, exposed ports, and small action buttons.
The camera is housed in a waterproof case that can withstand a depth of 30 meters and a drop of 2 meters. Like many other action cameras, the Kogan version records full 1080p at 30 fps, down to 720p at 60fps. Its lens has a 170-degree field of view, on par with competitors like Sony ActionCam and GoPro. There is a 1.5-inch color display on the back for framing and viewing shots.
The action camera has more external controls than some of the smaller budget cameras we’ve reviewed, such as the Kaiser Baas X80. The back has navigation buttons, while the top panel has video playback and recording buttons.

The Action Camera Black Edition comes with several mounts in the box, including a handle mount, helmet mount, and suction cup mount. Two adhesive mounts are also attached. They all attach to a waterproof case, which is larger than a simple GoPro case. The remote control is also included in the box.
There are several scene modes to choose from, including Night, Sports and Landscape. Otherwise, you can leave the camera on default (which is its default setting anyway). Video image quality is reasonable for an action camera at this price point. In default settings, colors are well saturated.
The digital image stabilization system doesn’t do much to compensate for a lot of camera shake, and it makes pictures a bit shaky.
Some fringing and chromatic aberration can be seen in still images and video. This is especially noticeable in high-contrast and low-contrast areas. For example, trees in the sky can create a halo effect, and purple fringing can sometimes be seen.
During recording, the screen turns off by itself. However, you can see that the camera is still recording due to the blinking LED on the back of the device.

The original model, released in 2013, was a cheap and cheerful affair no bigger than a matchbox. It certainly has its issues — like a weak battery and mediocre image quality — but it leaves an itch for many consumers who just want a cheap alternative to the world’s GoPros and Sony action cameras.
In this case, Kogan compares itself closely to the GoPro and Action Cam 3+ Black Edition (AU$159), especially since it lends itself to the naming convention of a market leader. Of course, the Action Cam isn’t as lean as other GoPros, even if the weight difference is small. The Action cam weighs 88 grams without the case, while the “equivalent” GoPro Hero 3+ Silver is 74 grams without the case.

Other features are thick and fast, a motion sensor built into the camera to automatically start and stop recording, a laser pointer to determine which direction the camera is pointing, and a 1.5-inch color screen on the back of the device. If you need to use the battery, the screen is removed from the camera and separated from the body.
Although there are many buttons to play with, they are easy to use. The three buttons on the top of the camera are responsible for the most important options: record, pause and capture a still image.
Connectivity is provided via micro USB and HDMI for connecting an external microphone. The Action Cam records to a microSD card and can take 8 megapixel stills.
A major design flaw is the position of the power switch, which sits on top of the camera. When the camera is in position, there is no way to turn the camera on and off without removing everything and flipping the switch. Remember to open it before putting it in the case.
