Since the beginning of device hacking, people have used their devices because they can, not for any useful purpose. Back when the PSP was very popular, many people, including myself, used Windows 95/98/ME for fun. I recently decided to do something else just for fun and that is to run iOS 7 on my iPod Touch 4!

Back in 2010 Apple released 3 devices with the Apple A4 SoC of iPad 1, iPod Touch 4 and iPhone 4. It is very strange that they only provided 512MB RAM in iPhone 4 leaving only 256MB in iPod Touch 4/iPad 1. RAM which later caused performance problems for these devices. The iPad 1 was killed with iOS 6 and the iPod Touch 4 with iOS 7, but the iPhone 4 survived until iOS 7.1.2, although it did not work well.

A few years ago, running two versions of iOS on older 32-bit Apple devices became an easy thing to do, and naturally, some people decided to try an unsupported version of iOS on their devices.

After following exhaustive instructions and asking for help, I was able to run iOS 7.1.2 alongside iOS 6.1.6 on an iPod Touch, and here’s what I learned:

If you want to try it yourself, follow the link below and prepare for a headache or two. The iBEC / iBSS (an important part of the boot circuit) patching step is very complicated, so I suggest asking someone for the patched file as I did (thanks Raffaele) if you -can’t figure it out. For those who don’t want to boot their systems, they can create a custom IPSW to boot from DFU mode!
Also, follow the instructions for iOS 7+ and good luck! And don’t forget to delete / Applications / Setup.app your iOS 7 partition, otherwise you won’t be able to use it because it doesn’t work!

You can still make phone calls, surf over 3G, or get GPS signals with the Touch, but the differences between the Touch and the iPhone are very small.
The front-facing camera supports HD video recording up to 720p at 30fps. The video files are h.264 QuickTime MP4 and can be edited directly on the device using the main finishing function or other advanced iMovie editors (available for $4.99). You can sync your recordings to your computer using the included USB cable, or send results directly from Touch via email. email or upload them to YouTube.
