In many ways, the iPhone 6s looks simple enough to check out, but when you dig deep, it becomes clear that the changes have been significant. During our review, we noticed major changes in the SoC, storage solution, camera, touchscreen, fingerprint sensor, voice recognition software, cellular architecture, and WiFi chipset.
How Good Is The Iphone 6s Plus
On the SoC side, it’s pretty safe to say that the A9 SoC is the best SoC in any phone today. We can talk about the TSMC vs. Samsung debate, but at the end of the day, whoever ends up performing will be much, much better than anything we’ve seen so far. There are many reasons for this, but at the end of the day, the bottom line is that the phone offers the best user experience in areas where GPU or CPU performance is the deciding factor. I’m back to browsing the web again, but given the wasteful but necessary abstraction of web pages and web apps, it’s vital that a high-end phone starts challenging 2-in-1s and passively cooled laptops. performance to guarantee a good user experience.
Apple Iphone 6s Plus 2018 Quick Review
While the CPU and strong browser optimization are critical to good web browsing performance, the GPU is the other half of this SoC’s equation, although it may not be fully utilized. The fact is that a lot of people use a high-end phone for gaming and it has to be really impressive in terms of high-end gaming performance. The iPhone 6s does well here. GFXBench isn’t the same as the actual game, but the fact that the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus basically freeze the T-Rex at the highest possible frame rate for most of the 3-4 hour endless run of this intense benchmark basically means that playing on the iPhone is the best possible experience for it because of its incredibly high uncapped GPU performance and the length of its uncapped GPU performance. No other SoC I’ve tested this year can handle this level of performance.
Another really impressive aspect of this generation iPhone 6s is the storage solution. The iPhone storage solution here is ahead of everything else in the industry for three clear reasons. The first is the use of a more sophisticated NAND organization. While TLC NAND alone is clearly inferior in performance to SLC or MLC NAND, the iPhone 6 uses SLC cache in combination with TLC NAND to improve storage performance where it matters. Another is the use of PCI-Express to allow much more bandwidth, which means that SLC cache can really stretch its legs to achieve the high bandwidth it is capable of. The third is the use of a custom storage controller with NVM Express, which helps take full advantage of PCI-Express. Overall, all of these things together create noticeable differences in the user experience. Probably the most obvious example here would be iCloud backups and restores and app installs and updates. Comics and camera speed have also improved thanks to better storage.
Another innovation worth discussing in the iPhone 6s range is the camera. The move to a 12-megapixel rear camera was something I was personally at least a little skeptical about, but after testing the camera myself, I’m firmly convinced that Apple was able to move to 12-megapixel without significant degradation. The camera may not be sharp in most scenes, but the extra pixels allow for 4K video recording, and this generation looks like a huge improvement in video recording quality. On both iPhone 6s, adding 4K video recording without the limitations of random recording, loss of image stabilization, or rapid overheating is surprisingly rare considering the number of phones that support 4K video recording. The addition of 1080p120 slow motion video only adds to how far Apple is in this segment compared to Android smartphones. The iPhone 6s Plus also has the rare distinction of having active OIS when recording video without the associated unstable OIS behavior issues. The only disappointment is that the iPhone 6s doesn’t have OIS, which is increasingly looking like a pretty significant difference. Live Photos is also cool, although at this point it remains to be seen whether it will catch on in the market.
The addition of 3D Touch to the iPhone 6s is probably something that seems gimmicky on the surface, but having spent enough time with the iPhone 6s, I can safely say that it’s probably one of the biggest UI changes in years. At this point, Apple has already managed to remove much of the friction that normally occurs when interacting with a smartphone when trying to preview content without losing focus. But in the future, I see significant changes in the way people interact with their phones. It’s certainly not a revolution in the same way that the original iPhone was, but it’s a critical development in the same way that high-DPI displays were. I don’t think anyone will suffer much because their phone doesn’t have pressure sensitivity, but once you have this feature, it’s hard to go back.
Iphone 6 Plus Teardown
Second-gen TouchID isn’t exactly life-changing, but it’s a welcome improvement nonetheless. Again, this is a user experience friction that wasn’t really noticeable until it was gone. It’s clear that Apple is no longer alone at this level in the fingerprint sensor user experience, but it’s keeping up. The addition of always-on Siri is similar to TouchID in this regard, because while it’s not life-changing, it’s a welcome improvement. The amount of custom voice recognition polish is also impressive to see in action, and something that isn’t necessarily present in every continuous voice recognition implementation I’ve seen.
Another finishing touch to the iPhone 6s is improvements to the cellular modem and WiFi chipset. An upgrade to the Qualcomm MDM9x35 Gobi modem helps improve energy efficiency while the iPhone 6s transitions to UE Category 6 LTE compatibility. Moving to the Broadcom BCM4350 WiFi/BT combo chipset enables 2×2 802.11ac, which means better range and performance for routers that support MIMO.
Overall, after spending all this time with the iPhone 6s, I can’t find anything wrong with this phone. On the contrary, the A9 SoC is a huge performance leap, even compared to other SoCs of the same process node, and offers impressive application performance. The storage solution is unlike anything else I’ve seen on a mobile device. The overall user experience of the camera is probably the best on the market. 3D Touch is a big improvement to the user experience, while TouchID v2 and always-on Siri are valuable improvements to the user experience. The only real issue I can think of is that the iPhone 6s doesn’t have OIS and the base SKU still has 16GB of storage. To be fair, the 16GB SKU can become a significant UX problem if you’re constantly dealing with that storage limitation, and the jump from 16GB to 64GB seems simply designed to encourage buying the more expensive SKU. It has been argued that users who don’t really take a lot of photos or videos and don’t download all the media will be fine, but it’s still a user experience issue today. Despite these issues, however, I would argue that the iPhone 6s are the best phones you can buy today.
Of course, this sounds like a pretty empty recommendation to those who have followed our reviews over the past year. This year, more than ever, high-end Android smartphones seem to have stalled, as if smartphone upgrades have become a zero-sum game. So creating the best phone this year is very low. However, the iPhone 6s, even compared to the iPhones themselves, is particularly notable for improvements in the overall user experience.
