Hong Kong became synonymous with sartorial art in the mid-20th century, after the Chinese Communist Revolution skilled Shanghainese tailors moved to our city. Since then, clothing has been woven into the fabric of Hong Kong culture, changing with the times while retaining many of its traditional roots. We sat down with W.W. Patrick Chu and Arnold Wong from Chan & Sons and Ian Fong from Cuffs to chat about the industry and how it has evolved over the decades.
Patrick Chu, 52, is a partner at traditional Shanghai suit supplier W.W. Chan & Sons Tailor Ltd. He has been with the company for more than 30 years.
Arnold Wong, 36, is a store manager at W.W. Chan & Sons Tailors Ltd., where he worked for 15 years

Q: Our founder, Mr. W.W. Chan was born in 1922 in China and studied at a famous tailoring college in Shanghai, graduating in 1948. China was going through the turmoil of the Communist Revolution at this time, so from after graduation, Mr. Chan moved to Hong Kong and started making suits. In 1960, he opened his original tailor shop in Tsim Sha Tsui. His son took over the business years later, and the company changed its name to W.W. Chan & Sons Tailor Ltd. Our brand has grown over the years, but we still use traditional Shanghainese techniques, everything is cut the same way as Mr. Chan did years ago. What about your company, John?
Me: I founded Cuffs in 2011, but before that I had no experience in tailoring. I first studied engineering and then went on to work in the food and drink industry before moving into fashion. While working in restaurants, I gained entrepreneurial skills and decided I wanted to start my own business. I noticed that the clothing industry had room for improvement. It can be difficult for some customers to see what they want before it is in front of them. Some people find traditional tailoring a bit intimidating.
