A Guide To Qantas Flights From Australia To Japan
Kansai International serves the Kansai area of Japan. This area includes popular destinations Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe.
There are two airports in Tokyo: Narita and Haneda. It is possible to fly through one of them. Stopping for a night or two in Tokyo is a popular option to enjoy the spectacular views of Tokyo. Most international flights fly in and out of Tokyo Narita and most domestic flights fly in and out of Tokyo Haneda. There is a bus service if you need to transfer between them.
If you’re going to Niseko but want to spend time in Honshu (Japan’s main island) before flying to Hokkaido (Japan’s northern island) in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka, there are a number of airlines in addition to Japan Airlines and ANA low cost carriers flying to Sapporo New Chitose. Flight time is 1h45 between Tokyo and New Chitose.
Note that Japanese airlines do not release flights until 2-4 months in advance. So if you can’t find more domestic flights at reasonable prices, don’t worry.

The baggage allowance on most domestic flights in Japan is lower than elsewhere in the world. We recommend taking advantage of Japan’s reliable, fast and cheap domestic courier service called Takkyubin. There are Takkyubin counters at Tokyo Narita Airport and Kansai International Airport. Japan Holidays 2022/2023
Please note that these services may be subject to change at any time without notice and may only be available on certain days. Information accurate as of June 22, 2020. Airlines around the world have made major operational changes as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, largely avoiding Russian and Ukrainian airspace. While many flights have been extended, I think Japan Airlines’ new route to London might be one of the most interesting route changes we’ve seen yet.
Japan Airlines no longer uses Russian and Ukrainian airspace, and as a result the airline has canceled most of its flights between Japan and Europe. Flights between North Asia and Europe have historically been among the most dependent on Russian airspace, so airlines have had to adapt.
However, oneworld member Japan Airlines continues to operate certain frequencies to London, and the route is fascinating. For example, on March 2, 2022, Japan Airlines was still operating its regular route from Tokyo (HND) to London (LHR), for flight JL43. The plane flew west over Russia and the flight lasted 11 hours and 47 minutes.
Fast forward to yesterday (March 4, 2022), when Japan Airlines operated the flight without using Russian airspace. Instead of flying west, the plane flew east. It went straight to Alaska, took a northern route over Canada, came through the center of Greenland, flew over Iceland and then arrived in London.
Flight Review Airnorth Townsville To Gold Coast Coolangatta
The flight faced significant headwinds in the other direction, back to Japan. For example, on March 2, 2022, Japan Airlines flew the scheduled route from London to Tokyo (over Russian airspace) and took 11 h 12 min. On March 4, 2022, the flight operated in the other direction and took 15 h 27 min, adding more than four hours to the flight time.
On the surface, it looks like it would be an incredibly scenic route, as northern Canada, Greenland, etc. have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Unfortunately, it’s still winter, so if you look at the flight tracking software, it looks like these flights were in the dark most of the way.
The flight from Tokyo to London was briefly in daylight over northern Canada and Greenland, while the flight from London to Tokyo was more or less in darkness the entire way. That’s a long time to be in the dark!
In general, it seems that these flights are not sustainable. Long haul flights are already expensive to operate, and when you add in a few extra flight hours and high oil prices, this seems like a stretch. On the other hand, I think this is a pretty premium brand, and there are all kinds of flights between other city pairs that are regularly longer. I’ll be looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Japan Airlines currently continues to operate selected frequencies to London avoiding Russian airspace. This essentially makes the airline fly “the other way” around the world, adding several hours to the flight time in each direction.
I never thought we would see the day when a scheduled flight between Japan and the UK operated over the US, but here we are…
