Last week I had the opportunity to travel to the Gold Coast for a conference. This means traveling on Sunday mornings to get to the Monday afternoon sessions. After flying from Perth to Brisbane, I hired a car and drove to the Surfers Hotel. The flight on Qantas was fine, I still had 4 hours to study for the PPL exam. The focus is currently on navigation. You’ll know why when I find the blog entries for the three Nav flights I haven’t shared.

Cheap Flights To The Gold Coast

When I woke up Monday morning I checked the conference schedule, and my first session wasn’t until 2pm. So there is time left to run on the beach and work for a few hours (in peace!). Around 9:30, I was distracted by the confusing drone and screeching of the Jet Ranger helicopters transporting the tourists. It didn’t take long for me to Google the nearest airport and flight schools. There were two listings for Coolangatta Airport. I thought I was lucky enough to get an hour at one of the flight schools before the conference. I first called the Australian Wings Academy and was directed straight to CFI Nathan. He was friendly and after some thought said he could give me a Cessna 172R and an instructor who could show me around. We discussed the road and it was locked!!!

After leaving Surfers it was a nice 40 minute drive to Coolangatta Airport. Traffic on the Gold Coast was incredibly heavy, not helped by the significant build-up to the school event starting later in the week. Upon arrival at the Air Wings Academy, the friendly receptionist took me to meet Nathan, the CFI. We chatted for about 15 minutes and learned that he had undergone IFR training at Jandakot Flight Centre. He also worked at Australian Airlines for a while. It’s a small world of flying caps! After it was all over, Nathan introduced me to my co-teacher, Cameron.

Cameron had already flown in and submitted our flight plan. He was a gentleman who would let me in, let alone swing and fly away. Check out AirWings Academy’s contract to train AirAsia pilots. Cameron had to leave a few students to work on his theory to accommodate my flight. Coolangatta Airport is a Class C international airport, meaning it has significant jet traffic and is fully regulated like Perth Airport. Sweet!

The first time we saw that this was an international airport was when we disembarked the Tiger Airlines Airbus. We could also hear the Jetstart Airbus getting clearance to fly in as we approached the runway. When we were traveling by taxi, we stopped in front of the airport and ran away. You see, there were no seas here. After making the call, we were immediately cleared to take off and told that the hill in front of us was where we would take off. In Class C airspace, the tower provides much more guidance, which really makes life easier. As we approached the hill ahead, we were turned over the water for our 500 foot flight north of the Gold Coast. After 4 minutes in the air the Jetstar Airbus was cleared to take off, and no doubt it was well above us as we maintained our low altitude over the coast.

The first thing you notice is that the landscape is not flat, brown and boring, but green, mountainous and interesting. This was the theme for most of the summer. Our route was to take the entire length of the Gold Coast to Southport, then northwest for about 10 miles to DreamWorld, then southwest to the fantastic mountains! We must stay within 500 feet of Southport. However, before we reach Southport, the scale of the buildings in Surfers Paradise becomes more real. They rise well over 500 feet. Arriving at Southport, we finally climbed over 500 feet. As we did, the landscape finally began to open up in front of us and more spectacular waterways. Cameron gave me a tour of the island’s amazing homes. He simply called them the “haves” and the “have-nots.” In the opinion of the “have nots” they still seem to be more even on the face of the canal.

After a flight at DreamWorld we headed to beautiful Zaleje. The hills seemed to rise toward us quickly, but we had to wait until the height restrictions were lifted. At this point we climbed to about 4500 feet. The first thing that comes to mind is that they have no place to force the ground. Instead, for the next 30 minutes or so, you’re more focused on enjoying the scenery and listening intently to the roar of the Lycoming Power Plant ahead. We flew a back country route that took us flying between peaks and around the highest mountain in the area. It was great!

After rounding the mountain there was a natural valley in the middle of the hill where we descended to travel to Murwillumbah, at an altitude of 1500 feet. Cameron hadn’t told me before, but he jumped on the radio at Coolangatta Arrivals and didn’t ask for airport clearance, which is surprising after all. He applied for permission to run 500 feet across the River Tweed. The Tower quickly accepts the request and tells him to report to the Point Accident (what a great name for a reporting point).

“Yeah, that’s a big deal,” he said, “we don’t do this very often, we show our students this wonderful little secret if they’ve done really well.” Great, my first flight with them 🙂 He continued, “The rule is now you have to get down to 500 feet and stay directly above the water. You can’t fly over houses at this height so you have to focus on the water. We joined the river about 3 miles from Murwillumbah via Green Hills Caravan Park. I took the first turn in the center of town at a 30 degree angle. My smile was huge and it was very easy. Cameron commented that the turn was good but it was just for warm up!

He was right, in Tumbulgum town the twisters were starting to get really tight. This was probably the second most difficult. It took about a 60 degree right turn, full power and a struggle with the yoke, to turn and maintain our 500 feet. Exiting turns was just as powerful as entry, with either full boot or reverse steering to balance the turn. A few kilometers down the river was another tight bend, but there were no houses so it wasn’t much of a challenge. Then he approached!

Our final major turn would be to fly directly to the hills above us. It was covered with trees and as we got closer there was a wind effect
