Rogue Valley Pear Blossom Festival

This year’s Masters will be less colorful than what we’re used to, and it will be the strongest evidence to disprove perhaps the wildest myth in golf.

According to John Stredge of Golf Digest, the azaleas at Augusta National have already begun to bloom thanks to an unusually warm spring.

The US National Phenology Network says spring has arrived three weeks early in the Southeast, and according to one horticulturist, that means fans won’t see the famous Masters azaleas during the tournament.

Masters usually get lucky and have azaleas almost always blooming for the competition. In fact, they are so lucky that some believe farmers go to extra lengths to make sure the flowers bloom at the right time each spring.

According to John Boyett of the Augusta Chronicle, the ice theory has been around for decades. He said groundskeepers wrap azaleas in ice to trick them into blooming early.

Boyet spoke with a local horticulturist in 2012, who pointed out several major holes in the theory, including that ice has a habit of melting when it’s warm and that the golf course is really big and has a lot of azalea plants.
