After a wonderful vacation in the Maldives, I knew I had to come back. I can’t do this “once in a lifetime” trip just once in my life. Although I thought it would be a few years before I returned, the stars aligned with great opportunities to go back more than a year later.
Although this trip included many exciting flights, we will talk about my first flight with Cathay Pacific. I’ll give you an idea of what to expect: my first class is my favorite!

On December 31, 2018 (yes, New Year’s Eve), Cathay Pacific listed first class seats for just $850 in New York. All that was found was the return that started in Vietnam. For many people it is not a suitable option, but I really wanted to use it.
Capacity Growth Accelerates For Cathay Pacific, But Challenges Loom
I have been looking for another trip to do for my birthday in 2019 and Vietnam seemed like a good place to visit. So, yes, I wrote this so I could come home from my birthday and start another trip – this one to the Maldives.
But, I usually use points and miles to book this, I decided to pay cash instead of using 57,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points through the Chase travel portal.
Since this was a voucher, I was able to earn miles on this ticket. I chose the Alaska Mileage Plan because I would earn 350% of the airline miles as redeemable miles. That means I earned about 56,000 Alaska miles for this trip. That’s enough for one business class ticket on Cathay Pacific in Asia.
So, for $850, I got 2 first class flights on Cathay Pacific and enough points for another flight in business class. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Although my return trip was supposed to go to Vietnam, I stopped in Hong Kong to continue to the Maldives. This is a very interesting one that I would like to see again, although I don’t expect to see it anytime soon.
Since it’s likely we’ll see these tickets for $850 again, let’s take a look at how you can book your own Cathay Pacific flight with points and miles.
My favorite way to book Cathay Pacific is Alaska Mileage Plan miles. You can book an advance ticket for 70,000 Alaska miles. The tricky part is that you can only earn Alaska miles with Bank of America credit cards or by transferring Marriott Bonvoy points.
You can also add a layover in Hong Kong when you book the Alaska Mileage Plan, meaning you can visit Hong Kong for a few days (or longer) and then continue to another location such as Indonesia or Thailand at no additional cost.
Cathay Pacific To Cut Vancouver New York Route Next Spring
If you don’t live in a city that Cathay flies to, you can connect to Alaska Airlines for no extra miles. However, the Alaska Mileage Plan only allows you to include one partner airline on a one-way award ticket. If Alaska does not operate flights from your airport, you may need to book an alternate flight.
You can also book a Cathay First Class ticket for 110,000 American AAdvantage miles. Between Barclays and Citi there are similar credit cards available that earn American miles. Similar to Alaska, the only transfer partner is Marriott Bonvoy. You can also connect to the US with no extra miles if needed.
Finally, there is Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles program. Although it takes many miles of the three options at 125,000 miles for one way, it is the easiest for most people to get. You can transfer Amex member rewards, Capital One miles and Citi ThankYou Points to Asia Miles. Be aware of transfer bonuses from these partners and you may be able to use a few points for the same book.
The first step to enjoying the plane is figuring out how to get to New York since I live in Houston. I’ve flown many American airlines, but there was one I always wanted to fly: JetBlue. Luckily, JetBlue had cheap tickets from Houston to New York, so I booked our flights.

I had just gotten off the night shift at work and I really needed to sleep. We paid a little more for the “Even More Space” seats. No one ended up taking the middle seat between me and my wife, Miryea, so I had plenty of room to sleep. Before I knew it, we arrived in New York!
After arriving in New York, we headed to Terminal 8, where Cathay Pacific departs. We arrived more than a little early. Our Jetblue flight landed at 3:30pm and our Cathay Pacific flight was scheduled to leave New York at 1:35am.
Fortunately, we had access to the American Airlines Flagship Lounge because Cathay Pacific is a member of Oneworld. In fact, if you fly Cathay Pacific first class, you can enter the Flagship First Dining section of the lounge.
Space at Flagship First Dining is limited. Available only to passengers flying Flagship First on American Airlines and First passengers on Cathay Pacific. No other passenger will have access under any circumstances. Even guests with only an American Concierge Key don’t get regular access (although, American has given them one pass in the past ).

If you have access to Flagship First Dining, it is a must see. The food is curated by James Beard award winning chefs and it really shines. I have never had food like this in any other airline lounge. We tried dishes like the chimichurri rock shrimp arepo, muscova duck bacon, rack of lamb and, of course, the signature burger.
In addition to the great food, the wine and cocktail selection is above and beyond what you’ll find at your average business or lounge. Krug Grand Cuvee was available, and the wait staff was more than happy to pass it on.
Although Flagship First Dining is designed as a restaurant, it is more than just a living room. There were many people enjoying the best wine and spirits while working. Space is quite small, but we’ve never seen it crowded, another benefit of limited space.
The biggest challenge at Flagship First Dining is eating too much. Food on the ground is almost always better, but there’s nothing like eating at a restaurant in the air.

If you don’t have access to Flagship First Dining, you will have access to the lounge. While most people end up near the dining area, there is another side to the right of the door that guests often miss.
The right side of the living room is an outdoor space, so you can hear the noise of the place, but it was almost deserted compared to the other side. There is also a bar there, where you can have drinks while waiting for your flight.
Showers are also available. The decor is very elegant, with dark gray shower walls and frosted glass on the shower. Baths are supplied by the C.O. Bigelow brand soap. We took a long shower because it was almost midnight and we wanted to freshen up before being on the plane for 16 hours, so the staff started cleaning and closing the lounge.
I liken the Flagship Lounge to a Centurion lounge with a bit of bad food in the main dining room. But if you can find Flagship First Dining, you’ll struggle to find anything better in the state. Flagship First Dining truly holds its own with the offerings of other lounges around the world.

The only change I would like to see implemented is the lounge reserved for first passengers outside of Flagship First Dining. This will help make the whole experience feel special, and take advantage of the main lounge and offerings made by some of the world’s best airlines such as Emirates, Singapore and Cathay Pacific.
