Tuesday’s Traffic Tip
In September 1922 the Eacham District decided to use £10,000 of funding from the Australian and Queensland Government unemployment schemes to build the Cairns Ridge Road to provide a short route from the Atherton Tableland to inland Cairns.
Immediate objections to the proposed route from Gordonvale to Atherton due to the difficult terrain, with a counter-proposal to build a road from Smithfield to Cairns to Mareeba via Kuranda,
But this route would be more advantageous for the Mareeba coast than for the Eachama coast, so the original plan continued (although the Kuranda Mountain Road would be built later in 1940).
It was officially opened on Saturday 10 July 1926 and allowed travel between Cairns to Tableland in 2.5 hours.

Gillies Highway was named after former Queensland Premier and local member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, William Gillies.
Following his sudden death in February 1928, it was proposed to name the Cairns Ridge Road (as it was known) after him, but this was not officially approved until March 1934.
On February 4, 1987, a bus carrying 12-year-old Cairns State High School students and teachers veered off the highway and plunged 20 meters into the rainforest, killing 8 people.
