Asus Gaming Desktop Australia – An ASUS ROG X470-F test bench was recently provided and we’ve had a lot of questions about the setup, which I’ll answer here.
Previously, our system was in the In Win 509 case, but the rig has now returned to the outdoor test bench because it is easier to move around, takes up less space, and make listening to fan noise more stable.

We put the NH-D15S to better test other fans and graphics cards in terms of noise isolation, as it offers a quieter ride. The current test machine is quieter with an ASUS STRIX GTX 1080Ti OC and NH-D15S CPU, and is able to deliver high performance with an audio profile that barely registers on our decibel meter under load.

You use 4 sticks of RAM – do you need 32GB of RAM? Wouldn’t Ryzen be better with only 2 sticks?
For gaming and general use, the 2×8GB G.Skill 3200MHz Flare sticks are ideal according to our general CPU benchmark test. The reason I am using 4×8 modules is because of ASUS RAMCACHE II. When I have 16GB of cache allocated it greatly reduces subsequent game load times (like after the initial load). I still use 16GB of RAM for system memory, but the rest is cache managed by RAMCACHE II. This is probably the main practical feature of the system that I miss on other motherboards I use.

I had a series of intermittent hard locks in September when I had to turn the system off at power-up because the power supply button was not responding. After switching to the Corsair RM850x, the system is perfect. Other than that particular issue, this test platform has been 100% stable and has given me no grief. I still recommend the STRIX X470-F motherboard and the STRIX GTX 1080Ti. This setup has provided the best gaming experience I’ve ever had.
The HyperX Predator RGB DDR4 kit also worked according to the review and the withdrawal of RGB effects not working through the ASUS AURA software is still there. Static colors are good but the other lighting effects of the latest ASUS AURA software are still missing. I don’t mind this because I find the light changes a bit distracting, and the test bench always runs static color, or we run it stealthily with all the lights off.
Yes – you can turn the AURA light off completely, or customize the light to dim or if it’s distracting to you. If I need to run the system overnight, I use the AURA app and click the ‘off’ toggle. It is also possible to reduce the brightness.

Here’s the thing – there isn’t one main reason. Build quality proves to be high and I can ‘tune’ the system in many ways – thermally and acoustically through FanXpert, LAN priority, cache for load times using RAMCACHE II. Audio is also very good, with front and rear amplifiers and speaker impedance sensing. This is a solid choice as it has many additional features/value at the ~$300 price point.

The X470 chipset is the flagship AM4 offering with multi-GPU support, more USB and storage options, and better overclocking capabilities. Vendors are investing more to include more bells and whistles on the X470 motherboard than the B450 to compete at an enthusiast level.

You pay more for an X470 board like the STRIX X470-F Gaming, but you get more – and only you can decide if the savings are worth it. For a long lasting system, I’d be more willing to spend a bit more on the motherboard if the money is available. For people who switch and sell their old computer every couple of years, the B450 may be more appealing.
As far as X470 motherboards go, the STRIX X470-F is still a good price and worth every penny as far as I’m concerned.
There are no guarantees when it comes to overcoming – just remember that. In our case, the Ryzen 2700 can be overclocked to get the same performance as the 2700X out of the box. You need a good motherboard with good cooling and a clean power supply. As far as our testing went, I’d be happy with an overclocked Ryzen 2700 for my personal machine, since I don’t mind tinkering in the BIOS.
The thing to remember about the 2700X is that it’s rated at higher clock speeds and has Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR2) to take advantage of the supercooling if you’re using something better than stock. cold – the 2700 is not rated higher. Our 2700X doesn’t overclock – it rocks at stock settings with DDR4 running on an XMP image. The Noctua cooler keeps it cool and I’m very happy with the performance – especially for the price. The screenshot below shows the temperature we see after 2 hours of OCCT in a room with an ambient temperature of 21.5C. The system was very quiet during this run, so we could have taken a few steps off with a more aggressive fan profile on the NH-D15S.
No. For most people, All-In-One (AIO) curved water coolers are more convenient and more efficient in terms of heat transfer and noise. AIO coolers are not necessary and you can get good results at low noise levels with good case ventilation and high air cooling like the Noctua NH-D15, NH-D15S, NH-U14S and NH-U12S. My favorite option is the NH-D15S which is almost silent because it has one fan between the fin stack columns and an asymmetrical path that makes it easy to access the graphics card in the PCIe slot.
Air coolers have fewer points of failure, take up more space in the socket area, and are less complicated to install in an AIO case with a water block/pump, two pipes, and a radiator with followers. While I appreciate the convenience of an AIO and the convenience of a motherboard water block, the simplicity of a quality solo air conditioner is also a big draw for me.
