A public viewing area is available on both sides of Puinui Road on the eastern approach to the airport. This area is marked and offers good photo opportunities if planes descend from the east.
Moto Car Rental Car Hire At Auckland Airport
The airport has two terminals. NO viewing area in the terminals unless you’re actually flying – if so, good views from the big windows in both the domestic and international terminals.
Don’t miss Percival Gull G-ADPR hanging from the ceiling in the public area of the international terminal up the stairs from the international arrivals area.
It’s also possible to get photos of aircraft on the two eastern aprons – one that often welcomes short-term cargo aircraft arriving from the domestic terminal. The apron further east, where business jets are often parked, can be accessed from the service road off Hape Drive, near the DHL building. I haven’t had a problem with security on quick visits here.
A view of the Air New Zealand service area can also be obtained by parking in the DHL visitor car park – Laurence Stephens Drive. Again, if fast, I had no problems.
Ezi Car Rental At Auckland Airport (akl)
A view from the top floor of the multi-storey car park from the domestic terminal is also possible, but the views are not great.
It is located approximately 30 minutes south-west of Auckland city centre, near Alfriston. This is a fairly busy light airport with a large cafe open to the public that overlooks the main runway. There are many hangars that house old aircraft being restored as well as local light aircraft. The Oceania hangar at the entrance often hosts helicopters imported from abroad, and in good weather the hangar can be seen from the airport’s main road. They also have their own little apron outside the hangar.
More security fences may be added during 2016, but at the time of writing you can still drive from the airfield to the hangars at the opposite end and get a view of the warbird hangar and apron. It is home to many Harvards who are active year-round when the weather is good.
Ardmore Flying School has a porch where you can ask to sit and see their aircraft up close. Access from the intersection at Takanini from the southern highway.
Moto Car Rental
Located about 30 minutes north of central Auckland. Access is from the main northern motorway junction to Silverdale and Dairy Flat. The airport is on Postman Road off Dairy Flat Highway via Wilks Road.
A number of BN Trislanders served here on the North Shore, but as of April 2016 only a few “remains” remained, including VH-NKW stored between two hangars – visible from the entrance on the north side of the airfield.
The flying club here has a clubhouse where visitors are welcome, and good photos can be taken from here or in the adjacent parking lot.
Located on the North Shore on Rosedale Road. About 5 minutes drive from the intersection on the northern highway.
Jean Batten: My Life
Rosedale is the base for Helitranz and on a sunny day there are often helicopters parked outside. I did not ask to see the hangar, but it is possible on request.
It is located in the city center off Tamaki Drive. Limited parking at the entrance to the wharf near the restaurant (Mikano). A public walkway runs alongside the heliport fence and next to the cargo terminal to the docks, which overlooks the entire heliport area.
Two small strips on the “top” of New Zealand. Often the last/first stop for aircraft entering or leaving the country. Quite quiet. Both airports have easy access and views from the apron.
The glider club gave me access to their hangar on request – they are on the west side of the airport.
The Best Addresses For Automobile
There is also a viewing area near the flying club. If you are willing to walk, you have several advantages.
Another bonus is the GREAT little airplane museum that is very cheap to get in (only about $10). It also has a great cafe called Avgas Café.
Views of the apron from the main terminal and the adjacent car park with the new heliport next to the terminal with several glass panels showing the helicopters inside.
The best place to find it is in the center of the airport near the control tower and flying club. Plenty of free parking here. Access is from Ohaupo Street. Good view of the central apron/flying club grass parking area and also of any crop spraying aircraft operated by Farmair.

Note: along the airport road towards Cambridge about 1 mile from the main airport is the home of Pacific Aerospace, which builds crop sprayers and paragliders. In my only attempt to gain entry, I found out that spotters are NOT welcome due to business security issues. But you can get good photos of anything outside the hangars from the public road outside.
Home to a small fleet of aircraft, several turboprops and a biz jet. Lots of good views around and inside the terminal and adjacent public highway.
A pseudo-busy international airport that often has biz jets and Air New Zealand / Jetstar aircraft.
The intersection of Grays Road and Avonhead Road has a great view of the Christchurch airstrip and taxiway – I didn’t park there, but I noticed people arriving and departing the airport there.
Percival D.3 Gull Six Archives
A fairly large general aviation field that has a small but interesting museum [website] that is well worth a visit.
Large and busy Otago Central Airport about an hour and a half north of Queenstown by road. It has many hangars that look out between each other and across the central grassy area to any parked aircraft.
Queenstown is home to many of the scenic flight helicopters and is usually visited by visitors from the jet business, especially in the summer months.
The airport is located near a shopping center that provides access via a road overlooking the airport and behind some hangars.

Lots of parking spaces (paid) in the central part near the terminal, but also free parking in the shopping center next door.
You can find up-to-date details on visitors and aircraft movements in New Zealand on various blogs. The top two I follow are: The Percival Gull was a British single engine monoplane that first took off in 1932. It was successful as a fast carrier, racing aircraft and long distance record holder. It was developed in Vega Gull and Proctor.
The Percival Gull was the first aircraft of the Percival Aircraft Company, created in 1932 by Edgar Percival and Lt. Cdr E.B.W. Escape. Designed by Percival himself, it was heavily influenced by the Hdy 302 designed by Basil “Hdy” Hederson, who had previously owned and raced it. The new company had no Gull production facilities, so the prototype was built by the British Aircraft Company of Maidstone, Kt, and the first 24 production machines were built by Parnall Aircraft of Yate, Gloucestershire. In 1934, the Percival Airplane Company moved to Gravesd, Kt. Airport.
