The Ford Ranger is a line of pickup trucks manufactured and marketed by Ford in North and South America under the Ranger nameplate. Introduced in early 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger is in its fourth generation. The model line was developed as a replacement for Mazda’s Ford Courier and was sold across America. Ford of Argentina began manufacturing the Ranger for South America in 1998.

During its production run, the model line was a close rival to the Chevrolet S-10 and its Chevrolet Colorado successor (and its GMC counterparts), with the Ranger being the best-selling compact truck in the United States from 1987 to 2004, and from 2012 to 2018 discontinued the Ranger lineup in North America when Ford signed the F-Series full-size pickup trucks. For the 2019 model year, Ford introduced (after a seven-year hiatus) the fourth generation of the Ranger. As the first mid-size Ranger in North America, the model line is derived from the globally marketed Ford Ranger (modified to meet North American design requirements).
The first three generations of the Ranger were manufactured at Ford’s Louisville Assembly (Louisville, Kentucky), Edison Assembly (Edison, New Jersey) and Twin Cities Assembly Plant (Saint Paul, Minnesota) plants. The last 2012 Ranger was the last vehicle produced at the St. Louis plant. Paul. The current fourth-generation Ranger is manufactured by Ford at Wayne Stamping & Assembly (Wayne, Michigan). Ford of Argentina produced the Ranger at the Geral Pacheco plant from 1998 to 2011; It replaced the North American designed Ranger version of the current Ranger T6 for 2012 production.
For the 1972 model year, the Ford Courier was introduced as the first compact pickup truck sold by Ford. Following the rise of the compact truck segment in the 1960s, Ford partnered with Mazda to market the Mazda B1800 in North America. The Courier was the first of many vehicles jointly produced between the two companies from the 1970s through the 2000s. Along with reducing the risk for Ford of developing a car in an unfamiliar part of the market, the partnership gives Mazda the necessary funds.
The Courier shares a cabin and chassis with its Mazda counterpart to increase its sales potential in North America, but inherits design cues from the Ford F-Series with twin round headlights, a silver grille and “FORD” lettering on the hood above the grille . In 1977 the Courier and B1800 (later B2000) were restyled with a larger cab, redesigned pickup bed and tailgate. While the Courier looks closer to its Mazda counterpart, it gets a signal/parking light placed in the grille (instead of the bumper). An optional 2.3L Ford Gine is not available in Mazda pickups.

From 1972 to 1982 the Ford Courier was produced together with the Mazda B-series in Hiroshima, Japan. To avoid the 25% chick tax on imported trucks, both vehicles were imported as cab trucks (with a 4% duty). Once imported into the United States, pickup beds shipped separately from Japan are installed before shipping to dealers.
In addition to developing the first domestically produced compact truck, another key factor in the $700 million project was meeting fuel economy standards of the mid-1980s.
When the project began in 1976, Ford predicted that nearly 50% of pickup trucks sold in the United States would need a 4-cylinder engine in order for the company to meet 1985 CAFE standards.
In 1976, compact trucks accounted for 5% of pickup truck sales, which Ford said would rise to 50% by 1985, equivalent to nearly a million sales a year.

At the outset of the project, Ford researched additional elements that would be appreciated by potential compact truck buyers.
Along with flexibility for work and personal use, Ford sees buyers wanting more interior space, including seating for three, comfortable seats, and head and legroom for a six-foot-tall driver; Other small details were spotted, like five pin wheels and a larger ashtray.
During design, the body underwent extensive wind tunnel testing to meet a projected fuel efficiency target of 20 MPG (the standard front bumper spoiler itself added 1 MPG);
Won the two-door Ford Mustang. To further improve fuel economy, Ranger has increased the use of high-strength steel and other lightweight materials, including magnesium clutch housings, aluminum transfer cases (for 4WD) and magnesium clutch/brake pedal brackets.

For further weight savings, the front suspension design is computer-optimized, and the addition of a front anti-roll bar is optional.
Although the Ranger’s bed is narrower than the F-Series and other full-size competitors, it can support a 4-foot-wide sheet of material (considered industrial size in the pickup truck bed design space). into the cutouts to insert the supports across the bed, allowing this material to be placed over the wheel arches.
The 1979 fuel crisis almost brought the Yuma/Ranger project to a halt when it occurred between the launches of the 1979 Ford LTD and the 1980 Ford F-Series. After selling nearly a million F-Series trucks in 1978, by 1980 Ford had yet to make a profit from the F-Series redesign.
Ford President Don Peters is keeping the compact truck project alive for several reasons. By 1980, General Motors was developing its own home-built compact truck, with the Chevrolet S-10/GMC S-15 being a strong competitor.

Peterson also believes that when properly outfitted, buyers will pay about the same for a compact truck as they would for a full-size truck (like the F-100).
Around 1980, the Project Yuma truck adopted the Ford Ranger name, taking the name of the mid-to-high trim level used by the Ford F-Series and Bronco since 1965. In anticipation of the compact truck line, 1981 marked the last use of the Ranger trim on the F-Series and Bronco (replaced by the XLS for 1982).
The Ranger was produced at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Kentucky from 1982 to 1999. From 1993 to 2004 production also came from Edison Assembly in Edison, New Jersey. For its tire production, the Ranger was manufactured at the Twin Cities Assembly Plant in St. Paul, Minnesota until 2011. The last 2012 Ranger was produced on December 16, 2011, ending 86 years of production at the Twin Cities Assembly and the production of all compact pickup trucks in the United States.
In 2008, Ford made its first plans to produce the Ranger in North America; although its high productivity saved it from The Way Forward, Twin Cities Assembly (founded 1925).
